for the
HCS 2012 Meeting

 

 


The Histochemical Society offers a number of awards to its members, including travel awards and achievement awards. You must apply for an award or be nominated (see individual descriptions for details), be a member in The Histochemical Society, and attend the annual meeting and be present to receive the award.

Applying for Awards
To apply for an award, please fill out the Award Application and return it to The Society via email to <mail@histochemocialsociety.org> by the deadline. The form is an Adobe PDF and will require Adobe's Acrobat Reader to open, fill out, and print. The form contains a button for submitting the PDF via email, and a button for printing the form so it can be faxed. Multiple awards can be applied for on one copy of the form. If you are emailing the form, please include HCS Awards Nomination 2012 in your subject line, and address it to Dr. John Shacka, HCS Awards Committee Chairman.

The deadline for awards applications for the 2012 HCS Annual Meeting is January 31, 2012. Applicants of any award except the Gomori and Carpenter-Rasch Awards must also submit an abstract to HCS by the Abstract submission deadline, January 31, 2012.

Short Course Associate Award

NEW for 2012: SHORT COURSE ASSOCIATE AWARD

This is a new award exclusively for previous Short Course participants (2011 or earlier) who express a desire for continued learning from and for providing hands-on help for the short course. Up to three (3) awards are available. Awardees will assist either with the set-up of the short course and/or a specific module of their interest, and may be asked to give a brief presentation during the short course. Applicants will provide an abstract that describes how the short course has directly helped their research project and/or job performance, and which indicateds how they wish to contribute as an Associate awardee. Up to $1000 is available from this award to attend the short course. An additional $1000 is also available as part of this award to attend the HCS Annual Meeting (if applicable).

FASEB MARC Awards

FASEB MARC AWARDS

The FASEB MARC Program will sponsor the HCS/FASEB MARC 2012 Travel Awards to help support the participation of faculty/mentors, postdoctoral fellows, and students from minority institutions and historically black colleges and universities in the United States. Faculty, students, and postdoctoral fellows of underrepresented groups from majority institutions are also eligible to apply for these travel awards.

The HCS/FASEB MARC travel awards will provide up to $1,650 in funding for travel-related expenses and meeting registration to each award recipient (in the form of reimbursement after the meeting). The application deadline for MARC Travel Awards is February 12th, 2012. The MARC Awards have their own application form and instructions for applying.

Research Scientist Travel Awards

RESEARCH SCIENTIST TRAVEL AWARDS
Up to three (3) $2000 travel awards will be given to early career scientists (academic, industrial, or government scientists) who submit an abstract for presentation at the annual meeting, to defray the costs of attending the Annual Meeting and Short Course. Scientists who utilize molecular imaging techniques for cells and tissues in their research, and/or who have begun to work in fields relevant to the mission of The Histochemical Society are encouraged to apply. Applicants must 1) be HCS members and 2) submit an abstract for presentation at the Annual Meeting for which they are the presenting author. Awardees will be notified prior to attending the meeting and will also be reimbursed for one year's membership fees.

HCS Outstanding Young InvestigatorAward

HCS OUTSTANDING YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD
The HCS will present this highly prestigious award to a promising early career investigator who demonstrates scientific excellence through the utilization of histochemical and/or imaging techniques. Applicants must 1) be within 10 years of their terminal degree; 2) be nominated by their research mentors and submit a letter of nomination with their application package; 3) submit an abstract summary of their research (limit 1 page) along with their CV; 4) be HCS members to receive the award. The Awards Committee will determine if a meritorious candidate exists amongst the applicant pool, and if so a winner will be announced prior to the annual meeting. The OYIA winner will: 1) present their research findings in a 45 min platform lecture and 2) be provided with up to $2500 in travel expenses to attend the annual meeting and short course. Applicants not receiving the OYIA will be encouraged to present their research findings in poster format at the annual meeting.

Travel Awards for Students and Post Doctoral Fellows

TRAVEL AWARDS FOR STUDENTS AND POST DOCTORAL FELLOWS
Up to four (4) $2000 travel awards will be given to young histochemists in training, working either toward a doctoral degree or are in post doctoral fellowships at the time of the Annual Meeting, to defray the costs of attending the Annual Meeting and Short Course. Applicants must 1) be HCS members; 2) submit an abstract for presentation at the Annual Meeting for which they are the presenting author; 3) submit a cover letter from their mentor verifying they are histochemists in training. Awardees will be notified prior to attending the meeting.

The Vector Laboratories Young Investigator Award

The Vector Laboratories Young Investigator Award

To be eligible for this award applicants should be either junior faculty members or postdoctoral fellows within three years of their thesis earned doctorate at the time of the annual meeting of the Society. Applicants must submit an abstract accepted for presentation at the annual meeting of which he/she is the senior (or sole) author. Membership in the Society is required. This award consists of a certificate and a $500 cash prize to defray travel expenses to the annual meeting.

The Ralph D Lillie Award

THE RALPH D. LILLIE AWARD
A $2000 cash prize and certificate will be awarded to the most outstanding oral presentation by a doctoral student or first year postdoctoral fellow (i.e. within one year of having received the doctoral degree at the time of the annual meeting) award applicant, to be judged at the Annual Meeting. Applicants must 1) be HCS members and 2) submit an abstract for which they are the presenting author. Applicants selected to compete in the oral presentation session will be notified prior to attending the meeting.

The Anna-Mary Carpenter - Ellen M. Rasch Award

THE ANNA-MARY CARPENTER-ELLEN M. RASCH AWARD
(Nominations accepted every year for presentation at annual meeting.)
This award recognizes the outstanding efforts and contributions by Drs. Anna-Mary Carpenter and Ellen M. Rasch, and to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions and service to the Society. The award may not be presented annually, but rather when the Awards Committee and Council determine that a meritorious recipient has been identified. Nominations are accepted annually at a time designated by the Society. Eligible members include those who have made significant contributions to the Society and to the scientific community. Nominations must include a curriculum vitae or biographical sketch of the nominee, and a nominating letter describing the contributions or service of the nominee in the field of histochemistry and cytochemistry and/or the Society. The award consists of a cash prize of $1000; an award plaque; and reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses and registration at the annual meeting. (Letters of Nomination for the Carpenter-Rasch Award should be addressed to Dr. John Shacka.)

The Council of The Histochemical Society instituted the Carpenter-Rasch Award to honor Anna-Mary Carpenter and Ellen Rasch.
The George Gomori Award

THE GEORGE GOMORI AWARD
The Gomori Award will not be awarded until 2015

This is the highest award offered by the Society and was established in 1987. The purpose of the award is to honor Dr. George Gomori and to recognize outstanding contributions to the field of histochemistry and cytochemistry. It is presented every four years at the annual meeting of the Society in the year immediately preceding the meeting of the International Federation of Societies for Histochemistry and Cytochemistry. To be eligible for the award, membership in The Histochemical Society is required. The award consists of an award plaque listing the names of the founders of The Histochemical Society and a cash prize of $1000. Past recipients include Charles Leblond (1987), Samuel Spicer (1991), Paul Anderson (1995), Marilyn Farquhar (1999), Morris J. Karnovsky (2003), and Paul Nakane (2007).
